How Camplero calculates profiles

Camplero calculates profiles, site types and activity status with fixed, public rules from open map data and the campsites’ own websites. No stars, no paid placement.

The six profile axes

All axes are rounded to two decimal places and bounded to 0–1. They are not stars or quality ratings.

“Not enough data” means there are no usable signals for that axis. It is not a low rating or proof that a facility is absent. A known zero can instead result from the available facts.

Nature

Measured location is the base: distance to nature areas, beach and lake shore. The website’s description of nature only nudges the value. Without location data, website wording alone gives at most a “mixed” value.

max(nature score, beach score × 0.8, lake score × 0.8) ± 0.1 (website nature indicator); website nature indicator → min(website nature indicator, 0.6)

Urban area ↔ In the heart of nature

Peace and quiet

The value comes from concrete signals: stated number of pitches, entertainment, kids’ club, disco or waterpark, pool, parties or a resort/holiday-park name. A site calling itself quiet, and a nature location, only nudge an already computed value. Without concrete signals the value is unknown.

0.5; pitches < 60: +0.3; pitches ≥ 150: -0.1; pitches ≥ 250: -0.3; party indicator ≥ 0.6: -0.25; animation/waterpark: -0.35; pool: -0.1; resort: -0.2; (quiet indicator ≥ 0.6: +0.1; nature score ≥ 0.6: +0.05)

Lively ↔ Very quiet

Service

Facilities have three states: has, explicitly has not, or not mentioned. Only stated facilities count – from the own website, owner facts or OSM fields (e.g. shop, restaurant, swimming_pool, internet_access, washing_machine, sauna; “no” means has not). A website that mentions nothing gives “Not enough data”, not “Basic”. Toilets and drinking water do not count as service.

number of service facilities / 6 (≥ 1 / 2×)

Shop · Restaurant · Pool · Wifi · Laundry · Kitchen · Sauna · Cabins · Glamping · Bike rental

Service labels: Simple below 0.34; Medium from 0.34 to below 0.67; Full service from 0.67.

Basic ↔ Full service

Family activities

Calculated from a stated playground, kids’ area, pool, children’s activities and the website’s family atmosphere – from the website, the owner or OSM. Not mentioned means unknown; only an explicit “no playground and no pool” gives zero. Pages that are not about the campsite are not used.

playground: +0.3; pool: +0.25; family indicator × 0.4; kids activities: +0.25

None ↔ Many

Proximity to town

Uses the nearest town (OSM place=town or place=city) – the same town shown on cards. Walking distance first, otherwise a short drive with lower weight, otherwise the distance to the nearest town. Villages (place=village) do not count as towns but are shown separately as “Nearest village”.

walking-distance score; short-drive score × 0.55; max(0, 1 − km / 25)

Remote ↔ Walking distance to town

Size

Website pitch capacity takes priority, then OSM capacity:pitches or capacity. No capacity means unknown.

pitches / 300

Small ↔ Large

Quality control can currently make manual profile corrections in the prototype; these are labelled as manual in the profile explanation. Owner access never permits these corrections.

Location and distance

Distances are straight-line distances to OSM points, not walking or driving times. A category applies within its limit. Its score falls linearly from 1 at zero distance to the minimum at the limit. Missing context data is unknown, not “no”. Town = OSM place=town or place=city. Village = place=village; it is shown separately and does not affect proximity to town.

By a lake is measured to the nearest polygon edge, including island shores – never the lake centre. OSM natural=water with water=lake/reservoir or no water tag, at least 5 ha, within 300 m straight-line distance. Full lake geometry is stored for reuse; failed tiles remain unknown. Lakes contribute to Nature with the same weight as beaches. Distance does not guarantee access or a bathing beach. Dogs welcome is a fact, not a profile axis: the site’s own details and website override OSM dog=yes/leashed/no. Not stated means unknown, never no.

Near town – walking distance
1.5 km · 1 → 0.3
Near town – short drive
15 km · 1 → 0.3
By the beach
1 km · 1 → 0.3
By a lake
0.3 km · 1 → 0.3
Scenic
2 km · 1 → 0.3
Trains nearby
5 km · 1 → 0.3

“Small and quiet” applies only to stated OSM capacity below the limit; absent activity information is not evidence of quiet. (60)

Site types

Campsite · Shelter and basic campsite · Scout/group camp · Motorhome stop

  1. A manual site-type correction by quality control takes priority.
  2. OSM tourism=caravan_site without tents=yes, or a motorhome-only name (Wohnmobilstellplatz, Stellplatz, Reisemobilhafen) without tent/camping signals gives motorhome stop.
  3. “camping” in the name gives campsite and wins over subsequent shelter and group signals.
  4. group_only/scout or names/operators mentioning scout, KFUM, FDF, lejrskole Pfadfinder, Zeltplatz or Jugendzeltplatz give group site.
  5. basic, backcountry, free sites, shelter without caravans, Naturstyrelsen or nature-camp/shelter names give shelter/nature camp.
  6. If the name and all contact/operating fields below are absent, an otherwise ordinary campsite becomes shelter/nature camp. Named sites are unaffected.
  7. Otherwise: campsite.

Activity status

Active · Likely active · Unknown · Possibly closed

  1. Closure fields (disused:*, abandoned:*, was:*, closed, end_date or operational_status containing closed/disused/abandoned) or closure text in a stored crawl error → possibly closed.
  2. Failed website with HTTP 404/410, DNS or fetch failure and no recent OSM check → possibly closed.
  3. Website read successfully and at least one season field or year-round opening is stated → active.
  4. Website read successfully without season, or a recent OSM check → likely active.
  5. Otherwise → unknown. A valid manual activity correction takes priority.

Activity is an indicator, not a guarantee. Current rules do not verify whether a stated season applies to this year. Closure text is checked in crawl errors, not all website text. Generic OSM edits and phone/email are not positive activity evidence. Only check_date, survey:date or lastcheck within the check period count. The unknown badge and tie-break apply only to campsites; possibly closed sites are hidden by default for all types.

check_date / survey:date / lastcheck ≤ 3 years
